Stillness, it scares us. Silence disquietens.
The wordlessness is disturbing. The quiet quite unnerving.

We grab a book, we put on music.
A long-pending chore we take on with vengeance.
They are our friends – books, music and even chores.
They shield us from the silence that shrieks.

Protection we need, from the person we’ve been avoiding.
The self.
The self we are scared we’ll recognize little, if we look within.

Little do we know, knowing that person inside
has its comforts. Even if, after going through the chaos that is silence.
It is a voice that wants to soothe a soothing “shhhh…”
to bring in a silence of its own.

But it’s this stillness that scares us. This silence that disquietens…
